MISSION TO THE MOON
CIRCUS MEETS SPACE TRAVEL
BLASTING OFF: 2025
Following in the footsteps of Highwire’s long-running circus shows for young audiences comes a show about three acrobatic astronauts on a journey from the earth to the moon. Fusing your favourite circus acts with all the latest science facts, Mission to the Moon will be out of this world! A perfect fit for holiday programming, festivals, and school tours around Australia with curriculum-focused content, and a timely eye on NASA’s current lunar voyages with the Artemis Program!
There is a perfect historical precedent to this show as well. In 1959, when NASA was designing tests for the first class of astronauts (the infamous Mercury 7) they wondered which profession might be best suited to space travel. Before they arrived at test pilots, they theorised about sending up circus performers: acrobats, aerialists, daredevils alike!
Can you imagine? Jugglers in space! We certainly can - and after Mission to the Moon, you will too!
Special thanks to the Portland Arts Centre for supporting the first development of this show!
Want to know more about the show?
Led by multi-instrumentalist, circus performer, and space-enthusiast Matt Anderson, this work features a creative team who are both accomplished acrobats and up on their science! They want to create a work which delights and inspires a new generation in space exploration. This multi-disciplinary show will also demonstrate the power of performing arts and imaginative play in helping to further young audience understandings of STEM subjects.
In addition to fusing circus and theatre in their Mission to the Moon, the artists are working on the following creative and teachable goals:
Teach students about the history of the space race, from the Apollo program to the upcoming Artemis missions.
Share the most out-of-this-world facts about our Moon, while exploring zero-gravity though acrobatics and juggling!
Show students some behind-the-scenes info on how astronauts live in space - from breakfast to bathroom breaks!
Share the spirit of adventure and discovery! Why are we going back to space, and how will this benefit both STEM subjects and the arts!
